Teaching Reading by Using Internet

source :webskillsnada.blogspot.com
Reading, it is one of four skills in learning language. Usually, in a language classroom, the teachers teach reading by giving a kind of text to the students. Maybe many students will feel bored about that, because they just read the text, identify the generic structure, identify the social function, just like that.

However, as the technology is developing nowadays, the teaching and learning process of reading in a language classroom can be helped by the technology. The technology that can help the teaching of reading is internet.

How technology and internet can help the teaching of reading in a language classroom, here is the simple explanation about it.

Most of us know that technology and internet are close with our daily life nowadays. Moreover, many students have used the internet for searching some information, for playing game, or other useful activities. It is realized or not, by using internet for those activities, students have studied about reading. As we know, the language that is used in internet is English. Maybe not all, but many of content in the internet are using English. It can make the students learn about reading and enrich their vocabulary undirectly.

The teacher also can use multimedia computers for teaching reading to the students. By using multimedia computers, teacher can play a video, song, or slides that has reading material in a classroom. By doing that, it can make the teaching and learning process of reading is not bored anymore, since the students not only read the text in a paper that is distributed by the teacher. The students can learn reading in an interesting way by watching the video, song, or slides that are played through the multimedia computers.

According to www.dominicanu.com , reading resources and activities are widely available in the internet, such as : text-reading software, fundamental skills software, vocabularies tools, or maybe dictionaries. All of those software can be found easily in the internet.

According to www.colorincolorado.org , Electronic books, or e-books, present traditional picture book text and images in an alternative on-screen format. The simplest electronic books simply transfer the story from paper to the screen, and allow the child to listen as the program reads the story aloud. Some e-books may also highlight each word as the child progresses through the book. More complex electronic books create a more malleable story, allowing children to manipulate the text and introduce features not found in traditional books (Labbo & Kuhn 1998).

Over all, the internet and technology can help teachers in teaching readings very much. However, we should be careful in using internet and technology, because there are also contents that not appropriate for students in the internet.
